Pillsbury is my current foster boy who has suffered some
MAJOR neglect. He has a snowy-white coat with just a tiny bit of tan left on the
tips of his LONG ears. Based on his dental condition, the vet estimates
him to be only 5-7 years old, yet he looks so much older. Like people, doggies
can age prematurely from stress (and neglect as in Pillsbury's case). He was
taken in by BHRSC a week before Christmas. Amazingly, a volunteer went to pick
up another basset at the shelter, and luckily for Pillsbury, she spotted him.
Pillsbury spent a week boarded at the vet. He had a TERRIBLE ear infection; it
was sooo bad, he grew a tumor in his ear that abscessed. I don't think he can
hear anything; he never responds to noise. He weighed
only 40 lbs. when I picked him up a few days after Christmas. He has a BIG
basset frame with big paws, which he needs to fill out to be a real doughboy
(he's getting there as he's now up to 47 lbs). He also has several growths on
his body. Pillsbury will be undergoing long awaited surgery this Thursday, so he
will need LOTS of Drool. His ear infection has finally cleared and I've been
aggressively flushing his ear canals twice a day this past week to get the
bacterial gunk deep down inside. We hope to remove the ear tumor, and as many
skin growths as possible, depending on how well he holds up in surgery. He
will also be neutered and get a much needed dental.
Pillsbury has been such a blessing for us. He is a very humble boy so
grateful for a full bowl to chow down and a comfy bed to rest his tired bones.
He now has a spring to his step, and his back legs are not as wobbly as they
used to be thanks to a daily dose of glucosimine. He has a big powerful
BarOOOOOOOOOOO at eating time that comes from what was once (and soon will
be again) a big, powerful chest! His eyes sparkle with love all the time, and
sparkle with BRILLIANCE when he gets a treat. Although he looks like an
old geezer, he is picking up lots of energy and speed every day. It's
hilarious to see this once wobbly boy burst into a sprint when he sees me go for
the ear cleaner, or when I find a puddle in the house (when our eyes lock,
I can tell his work just fine ;-0)! I know he's housetrained, and at first I
thought he was confused because I have 2
doors that go to the backyard. But like most bassets, he's testing me (and hey,
even though it's California, we've had some COLD nights, so he prefers to piddle
in the warm indoors)! Pillsbury loves his short walks in our cul-de-sac as he
shows off his snooty snood that keeps his ears out of the way of his paws! He's
a local snood-lebrity!
Froggie has graciously offered to send Pillsbury his own ortho bed and
bottle of glucosimine. I want to publicly thank her in advance for such
kindness. In addition to Pillsbury, BHRSC took in some other holiday seniors
that needed extensive vet work. As Pillsbury's surgery will also cost quite a
bit of $$, BHRSC would graciously accept donations to help cover these
costs. Pillsbury's pending surgery will be over $1k, and we don't know the exact
final cost due to the fact that he has so many growths; we do know he will need
follow up surgery to continue the growth removal since it will be impossible to
remove all the ones that should come off in just one surgery. Will keep you
posted on this, but please send that Drool,
and if you can, send what you can $$ to BHRSC. Thanks in advance for any gifts
for BHRSC and Pillsbury!
