The Adoption of Prescott W. Dennis (Sonny)
On October 24, 2003, I arrived home from a weeklong business trip to Philadelphia. Carol met me at LAX and we drove home. As we pulled in to the garage, then walked into the backyard I was surprised to see a new arrival. You knew him as Sonny. I was surprised but not that surprised.
During the weeks preceding that trip, Carol and I had visited Sonny several times at the Garden Grove Community Veterinarian Hospital. We took him on walks throughout the adjacent neighborhood and were impressed with his disposition and eagerness to get out and explore. During one particular visit, we drove Sonny to nearby Old Town Orange. Together, the three of us explored the famous Old Town circle, the antique shops, and we dined el fresco at Watson’s Drugstore.
Each time we returned Sonny to his temporary home it became more difficult to say goodbye. As the one in the family who prone to proclaim that five Bassets would be out of the question, it was I who first said, “What do you think about Sonny?”
Sonny is a handsome, spirited and extremely loving young boy. It soon became clear that he had to join Emmitt, Blanche, Linus, Rumsfeld, Carol and yours truly. So it is not too surprising that a new Basset now occupies our Long Beach home. What may be surprising, however, is that he is no longer Sonny. Upon closer inspection, we saw not only exuberance and energy, but a level of sophistication and leadership. He has already had a profound impact on his older and more tenured siblings. We considered many potential names for our newest son but it was on one name that we agreed—Prescott.
Chemistry, fate, luck…who knows why things this turn out the way they do. All we know is that we are glad we found him. Based on the greetings we get each morning, Prescott seems to be glad he found us too.
