Sir Drooppy

I’ve always had a life long obsession with basset hounds. I got my first one when I was 15 and after she went to the bridge, Willow came into our lives courtesy of BHRSC (see Willow’s adoption story). For the last year and a half, I’ve harassed my husband endlessly for another basset. I’ve shown him pictures on the BHRSC website, relayed stories of some of the recently rescued babies, etc. All to no avail. I would receive a mildly interested reaction, but the subject would soon be dropped. I tried and tried but that perfect basset hadn’t reached my husband – yet.

I found out about a new rescue on the website named Sir Drooppy. I took one look at him and knew I had to pull out all of the stops to convince my husband that we needed him in our lives. What would I do this time to get the point across? How would I plead my case? I’d tried so many times before, so many different approaches. What could I possibly do to make this sweet baby different and stand out?

I coaxed my husband over to the computer and showed him Drooppy’s picture on the website. The clouds parted, music came out of nowhere and swelled, and I heard those three beautiful words, “Bring him home” Come out of my husband’s mouth. Stupid me. Drooppy was his perfect basset and all I had to do was show my husband his picture. It was love at first sight and it had nothing to do with me. It was all Drooppy!

We brought Drooppy home and he is doing wonderful. He has brought new life to our 11 year old wannabe Raley. She lost her playmate when our first basset went to the bridge. Our other rescue Willow had been too traumatized in her former life to ever play with her. Frankly, I don’t think she ever learned how. Now, Raley and Drooppy race through the back yard barking at each other and circling the fruit trees. The most amazing transformation is in Willow. She has started to play with Drooppy. She chases and barks at him and Raley. She even picked up one of his toys and started playing with it. She has never played with a toy before. It brought tears to my eyes. I never thought I would see the day she felt comfortable enough to play with anything or anyone. That was Drooppy’s gift to his new sister.

Our lives are just a little bit brighter now that Drooppy is here. We look forward to seeing his sweet, freckled face every morning when we wake up and every night when we go to sleep. He has brought a new found happiness to our home and added something that we never knew was missing. All I can say is Drooppy is ‘da man. Just ask my husband!
