Willow
About a year after our first basset Lizabeth went to the bridge, we decided it was time to let another wrinkled face into our lives. I contacted BHRSC and had two prospects to visit. A boy named Droopy and a girl named Gretchen. We were set to see Droopy first when I got a call about Gretchen. Apparently, she was having a hard time at her foster home and unless she was adopted immediately, she would have to be boarded. We decided to make a quick trip to visit Gretchen with our son and wannabe Raley. We took one look at “Gretchen” and knew we couldn’t leave her. “She must be ours!” we declared. We took her home that night and never looked back. Needless to say, we never got to meet Droopy, although we know he did get adopted! We decided our new baby was not a “Gretchen” so after much deliberation, she was christened Willow. Unfortunately, Willow had been severely abused, neglected and starved by people and other dogs. She was a pitiful 38 lbs when we got her. It was painful to look at her ribs almost poking through her skin. She was so scared that we couldn’t touch her any where on her neck for many months. She had a torn ear that had healed “split” long ago, scars all over her ears and body and her fur was dull and falling out. This girl needed some serious pampering! Fast forward two years. Willow is now a hefty 68 lbs and has soft, shiny fur that has grown in to cover all of the scars on her body. The scars and tear on her ear still remain, but we just call it her “fringe”. She has grown to love and trust us and know that she will never be abused or go hungry again. She still has issues with strangers and other dogs but has made great strides. She enjoys going to BHRSC events and always wears her hat (by Dona at Ears to You Hats) and pearls. You can always find her off to the side on her blanket the first Saturday of every month at Breakfast with Bassets at the Park Bench Café in Huntington Beach. While she still doesn’t like to interact with other dogs because of her trust issues, she sure does enjoy watching everyone else. It’s her own special way of participating. We are forever grateful to BHRSC for rescuing Willow and trusting us with her precious life. We think it was fate that brought us that phone call, prompting us to visit her first. She was meant for us – and we were meant to be her forever slaves! by Beth, John and Dylan Hamilton
